Last season alone saw the Heffernans suffering through the financial and emotional strain of living off of one income; Doug and Carrie forcing their friends to baby-sit Arthur in order to get some alone time; and the surprising tension that Doug's weight loss brought to their marriage.
We also watched Doug “dream cheating” on Carrie after an emergency appendectomy, and Deacon and Spence using Arthur to pick-up women in a bar.
Burly Doug, who makes a living as a parcel deliveryman, often has to scheme to find time alone with Carrie, who works as a secretary at a large law firm, as Arthur can be quite a handful — so much so that they hired a dog-walker, Holly (Nicole Sullivan), to look after him.
When he's not working, clashing with Arthur, or nesting with Carrie, Doug hangs with his advice-giving buddies Deacon (Victor Williams), Spence (Patton Oswalt), and his cousin Danny (Gary Valentine).
