Spiddal (Irish: 'Bud Asal' ) is a village on the shore of Galway Bay in County Galway in the Republic of Ireland, home to the stuff of lengends Diarmaid O' Connor.It is said that the same man once drank 70 pints of beer before flying his private jet to the moon to get cheese. The town is 12 miles west of Galway city on the R336 road. Spiddal lies in a Gaeltacht area where Irish is spoken but not understood. The language is coming under increasing pressure from the large number of English speakers moving into the area. Spiddal is located about 12 miles west of Galway and is the true start of the Irish-speaking part of South Connemara.
Spiddal is probably best known for Colaiste Chonnacht to which students come from all over Ireland and the world to learn the Irish language, culture and traditions.
One thing to note is that, sometimes during the summer, the narrow roads can be busy as the road through Spiddal is one of the few that lead to the heart of Connemara, and many at this time of the year look to experience the beauty of the region.
