Sponsors in the 12 step tradition help the addict to recover by bringing a personal experience of recovery on a one to one basis. Sponsors help the sponsee along the 12 step path working each step in turn and helping the sponsee to better understand his/her recovery.


In SLAA sponsorship, fostering the relation between sponsor and sponsee is considered a pillar of recovery, "reaching out for the supportive fellowhship of others."
