Sporge like most internet jargon, comes from Usenet, the greatest repository of net-terms ever to exist. Sporge is a contraction for "Spammed Forgery", originally coined by Tilman Hausherr, a German Software Developer. Essentially, unscrupulous individuals would post gibberish on various threads, in an attempt to make communication frustrating, and nearly useless. They would often use the name of a legitimate message poster, making their words more visible initially, and ruining that person's name within the community, identifying them as an idiot, troll, or just a generally painful nuisance.
The third method used to acquire newsgroup posting access, and the method that was used the most, was to use volunteers to go out and purchase Internet dialup access from an Internet Service Provider using a false name and address, and using cash or a money order.
These persons were given a large amount of cash and air fare to fly to a city specifically to acquire Internet access for later use in sporging.
One such volunteer later left Scientology and confessed to performing this task, giving the names of the Scientology staff members who were allegedly in charge of the sporgery project.
It's a brand new year and things are moving nicely at Sporge.
The site isn't officially live yet, so it seems folks are eager to have a another place to list their sites.
The editor staff is being trained on reviewing the sites for the public side, so it looks like in a month or two Sporge will be ready to really take off.
