Encyclopedia > Square and Compasses
A common Masonic representation of the Square and Compasses.

The Square and Compasses (or, more correctly, a square and a set of compasses joined together) is the single most identifiable symbol of Freemasonry. Both the square and compasses are architect's tools, and are used in Masonic ritual as emblems to teach symbolic lessons. Some Lodges and rituals explain these symbols as lessons in conduct: for example, that Masons should "square their actions by the square of virtue" and learn to "circumscribe their desires and keep their passions within due bounds toward all mankind". However, as Freemasonry is non-dogmatic, there is no general interpretation for these symbols (or any Masonic symbol) that is used by Freemasonry as a whole.[1] Image File history File links The Square & Compasses, one of the most prominent symbols of Freemasonry. ... The square footage of structures and acreage data found in MLS printouts, assessor records and the like are usually just estimates and should not be relied upon.
If square footage or land size is a material consideration in a purchase, all structures and land should be measured by the buyer or a licensed surveyor prior to entering into a sale agreement, or should be made an express contingency of the agreement.

In esoteric Masonry I was taught that the compass represents the sacred Goddess.
This is because the compass is used to describe a circle in geometry, and the circle is the consummate symbol of the Goddess in Wicca.
The square is sacred to Lucifer because of its phallic connotations, and the Fellowcraft candidate in Masonry is challenged on his right breast by the point of the square.
