Appearance

Squidward is, despite his name (a portmanteau of "squid" and the name Edward), a pale-skinned octopus, though he has six arms. Squidward uses two of these arms normally, and merges the other four into pairs for legs and feet. He is marked by his large nose and bald head, both of which shame him to no end. Character info

While his neighbors SpongeBob and Patrick are generally cheerful, Squidward is very irritable and unenthusiastic. He has a dry wit, and is constantly sarcastic. He is not very popular in Bikini Bottom due to his supercilious attitude toward those he feels are "uncultured". For example, when Squidward faked his own death in order to "haunt" SpongeBob, a funeral was arranged for him. Many guests were present at the wake, but to "make sure that [Squidward] was dead". Squidward is an aspiring artist and musician, though most of his art is created in tribute to himself and his music--his instrument of choice being the clarinet--is considered poor. It is revealed that an ancestor, Squidley, had cursed Squidward to be a mediocre musician when he decided that he would never be able to play the clarinet. SpongeBob and Patrick consider Squidward to be their "best friend", though he has a strong disliking of the duo. While he has made his opinion of them clear, they either do not care or are simply totally oblivious to the fact, as they treat him as "one of the guys". Their antics and games annoy Squidward, but he will grudgingly participate if egged on or challenged. One of the reasons Squidward hates the duo so much is because of their love for jellyfishing, tough it is revealed in one episode Squidward himself invented jellyfishing after getting sent back to prehistoric times.


Squidward works as the cashier at the Krusty Krab restaurant, only one room away from SpongeBob, the fry cook. He despises his job due to unintelligent customers, his skinflint boss, Mr. Krabs, and SpongeBob's enthusiam in working as a fry cook. Squidward considers himself the greatest and most unrecognized clarinet player of all time, though most undersea life that hear him play will argue that he is 'a mediocre clarinet player', and his clarinet playing often gets him into trouble (or injured in a comically, brutal fashion).
He is living Squidward's dream (with a private island, a private heliport, a private lake, a private boat, a private mansion and even a private hot-air balloon/casino) and succeeded in everything Squidward failed in.
Squidward is actually purple when not underwater, as shown in "Reef Blower" (although this was retconned later).
