Although the subject of this lecture is particularly related to the situation in SriLanka, it is important to understand the general predicament of the Muslim community wherever that community live as minorities in non-Muslim countries.
Not all the Muslims of SriLanka in the 16th century were Arabs or of Arab origin, and in fact, it could be argued that a majority of them were from the subcontinent and of Dravidian ethnicity.
The Muslims were thrown into a new predicament - to support the militants and live as a divided community, one-third in Tamil Eelam and the rest outside of it, or to deny Tamil Eelam, identify totally as Muslims and face the wrath of the militants.
The SLMC approach follows the concept of a cooperative society, where all communities feel secure, while retaining their distinct identities and professing their cultural, religious and economic ways of life and be springboard for the improvement of relations.
The SLMC proposes that both the peace negotiations and the settlement they ultimately reach must be within a framework of principles of pluralistic and participatory democracy, devolution, human rights, social justice, equitable dev elopement and transparency and public accountability.
While Muslims recognize the need to have a ceasefire between the Government and the LTTE, it is necessary that an addendum is introduced to the CFA, recognizing the Muslim as principal stakeholders and a key party with a direct interest in the outcome of negotiations.
