The Sri Lanka Air Force is the Airborne Wing of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces, and its key role is to provide tacical support to naval and land divisions.
History
The Sri Lankan Air Force was formed out of the elements of the British Royal Air Force that remained in in Sri Lanka after independance was granted in 1948. The Air Force is the youngest of the three armed services and was founded 9 March 1951. The Air Force started with mainly ex-RAF aircraft, with ten Chipmunk T10s being the first aircraft to be taken into service. In the early stages the Air Force only consisted of trainers, helicopters and transport aircraft. The first fighters were introduced in the early 70s, when five MiG-17Fs were delivered. - Provide rescue facilities and transport at the request of the Government.
- Provide engineering and logistics services to maintain aircraft, road transport, electronic equipment, other plant & machinery.
- Provide troops for internal security operations.
- Undertake non-military air operations and carry out research and development projects connected with national development.
