In December 2005, a new set of coins with denominations 5 rupee, 2 rupee, 1 rupee, 50 cents and 25 cents have been released, for circulation along side the older coins.


The lower cent denominations of 1 cent, 2 cent, 5 cent and 10 cent, although legal tender are not seen in circulation and not issued by the bank in general.

The observe and reverse designs of the new coins remained identical to the exsisting circulating coins of the same denominations. However their weights and alloys have been changed for easy identification purposes.

Sri Lankan banknotes are unusual in that they are printed vertically on the reverse. The currency note of 200-rupee is printed on a polymer substrate. Banknotes are printed by the De la Rue Lanka Currency and Securities Print (Pvt) Ltd, a joint venture of the Government of Sri Lanka and De la Rue, a printing company in the United Kingdom.

Sri Lankan rupee was pegged to the US dollar since it was launched but recently in the year 2003, the currency was floated in the world market, reason being the poor perfomance of the economy off lately.
Sri Lankan rupee is one of the only three rupee currencies that use “cent” as its subunit, though “cent” is a popular subunit of dollar currencies.
Rupee as the national currency unit of Ceylon was introduced 1870 at par with the Indian rupee and replaced the British currency unit @ 1 Sri Lankan rupee = 2 shillings and 3 pence.

The island of Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, lies within the Indian Ocean, with the Bay of Bengal to the northeast, separated from the Indian subcontinent by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait.
The Sri Lankan climate is tropical and characterised by monsoons; the northeast monsoon which lasts from December to March and the southwest monsoon from June to October.
Around 75% of the Sri Lankan population belongs to the Sinhalese majority, which is predominantly Buddhist and in particular of the Theravada tradition.
