St Enoch Square and the St Enoch shopping centre

The St. Enoch Centre is a shopping mall located in the central area of Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland. Construction began in 1986, and the building was opened to the public in May 1989. It was officially opened by the then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, in February of the following year. Located on the site of the former St Enoch Station, the building is just off Glasgow's famous shopping throughfare, Argyle Street and overlooks the historic St. Enoch Square and Subway station. Whilst the target of many architectural critics, the building is notable for its massive glass roof, which remains the largest of its kind in Europe. St Enoch Station, Glasgow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (262 words)
St Enoch Station was a former mainline railway station in the city of Glasgow, Scotland.
Located on St Enoch Square in the city centre, it was opened by the Glasgow and South Western Railway in the 1870s, before being taken over and then operated by the London Midland and Scottish Railway.
The red sandstone ticket hall which stands in St Enoch Square immediately west of the shopping centre is not part of the former rail station, but in fact the former ticket hall for the adjacent St Enoch Subway Station on the Glasgow Subway.

When the railways were king, St Enoch Station was one of the many large main-line termini in Glasgow, serving the trains to the south and west of the city.
Following the "rationalisation" of the railway system, it was demolished about 30 years ago and the space served as a car park for many years until the St Enoch Centre was built in the 1980s.
The St Enoch shopping centre was the first of the "mega" shopping malls in the city and is the largest glass-covered enclosed area in Europe.
