It was rebuilt by Thomas Cartwright in 1703. It had a Garret which was called the herb garret in 1821. In that year the Old Operating Theatre was built in the Herb Garret.
The Church was made redundant in the late 19th century and became the Chapter House of Southwark Cathedral. In the late 20th century it was used as office space by the Chapter Group - an insurance company. The Church was undermined by the Jubilee Line workings and repairs has still not be effected (2003) because a dispute between the Jubilee Line and the lease holders.
Built between 1835 and 1836, St. Thomas' Anglican Church in St. John's is purported to be the oldest Anglican church in Newfoundland.
Thomas' ceased to be a garrison church after 1871, when the last British military garrison in the colony was closed.
The church continued to have a problem with the structure swaying in high winds until 1851, when wings were built on the north and south sides of the building to stabilize it.

It is those teachings as conveyed by the apostle Thomas to the church he established in India that the St.Thomas Christians, despite struggle, dissonance and controversy, have endeavored to preserve in their purest sense.
The Church of the East is a protector and guardian of the Truths taught by Jesus to the apostles, practiced by them and passed on to their successors in true and unaltered and written form.
