St. Landry Parish is a parish located in the state of Louisiana. The parish seat is Opelousas and as of 2000, the population is 87,700.

Geography

The parish has a total area of 2,432 km2 (939 mi2). 2,405 km2 (929 mi2) of it is land and 26 km2 (10 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 1.08% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 87,700 people, 32,328 households, and 23,211 families residing in the parish. The population density is 36/km2 (94/mi2). There are 36,216 housing units at an average density of 15/km2 (39/mi2). The racial makeup of the parish is 56.51% White, 42.13% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 32,328 households out of which 36.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.30% are married couples living together, 17.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.20% are non-families. 25.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.21.


In the parish the population is spread out with 29.50% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 21.40% from 45 to 64, and 13.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 91.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.80 males.


The median income for a household in the parish is $22,855, and the median income for a family is $28,908. Males have a median income of $29,458 versus $18,473 for females. The per capita income for the parish is $12,042. 29.30% of the population and 24.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 37.70% of those under the age of 18 and 27.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
