St. Rose is a census-designated place and town located in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana. St. Rose is on the East Bank of the Mississippi River some 2 miles up from the Jefferson Parish, Louisiana line, and is sometimes considered part of the Greater New Orleans Metropolitan area. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 6,540.

St. Rose is located at 29°57'38" North, 90°18'47" West (29.960421, -90.313094)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 13.0 km² (5.0 mi²). 10.5 km² (4.0 mi²) of it is land and 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 19.88% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,540 people, 2,286 households, and 1,748 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 625.0/km² (1,620.1/mi²). There are 2,385 housing units at an average density of 227.9/km² (590.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 55.23% White, 41.51% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.19% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. 4.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,286 households out of which 43.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.3% are married couples living together, 21.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.5% are non-families. 18.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.86 and the average family size is 3.27.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 30.5% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 34.3% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 7.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.4 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $34,704, and the median income for a family is $37,772. Males have a median income of $30,972 versus $21,418 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $14,091. 12.4% of the population and 9.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.7% of those under the age of 18 and 14.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
