St. Thomas University (STU) is a liberal arts university located in Fredericton, New Brunswick. It offers degrees exclusively at the undergraduate level for approximately 3,000 students in liberal arts, humanities, education and social work.
The university was founded by the Roman Catholic Church in 1910 in Chatham, New Brunswick, but moved to a new campus in Fredericton's "College Hill" neighbourhood, adjacent to the University of New Brunswick in 1964. The two institutions now share facilities for their student unions, libraries, and athletics, and they have a common heating plant. This move was controversial at the time, since it was made by the Bishop of Saint John without consulting the Catholics of the Miramichi River valley, who had contributed heavily to the university's construction and had financially supported it for many years.
The 78 acre (316,000 m²) St. Paul campus consists of the original 45 acre (182,000 m²) campus, five acres (20,000 m²) of adjacent properties and 28 acres (113,000 m²) of the St. Paul Seminary campus (informally referred to as the "south" campus) that was transferred in a 1987 affiliation between St. Thomas and the seminary.
The University of Thomas is the only university in the United States to have a formal affiliation with the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, called the "Angelicum." The university was founded by the Dominicans in the 16th century.
The University of St. Thomas is a member of the Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities (ACTC), a consortium of five private liberal arts colleges.
UST is the only private, Hispanic-serving institute of higher education in Houston, TX; to earn this rating from the U.S. Department of Education, UST maintains a student body that is at least 25% Hispanic.
As of the 2006-2007 Academic Year, tuition costs for the University are set at $590 per credit hour with an $84 per semester activity fee, placing UST in the middle of colleges of similar caliber in terms of tuition costs and towards the lower end with regards to fees.
UST also maintains a connection with the Glassell School of Art for its Studio Arts program, which links the university to the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, one of the top art museums in the world.
