Stackelberg problems: Tikhonov regularization and subgame perfect equilibria (853 words)
A standard way to interpret Stackelberg equilibrium for strategic form games is to see it as a Subgame Perfect Equilibrium (SPE for short: Selten (1965)) of a perfect information game in extensive form where the leader moves first.
Two approaches, introduced and called generalized Stackelberg strategies by Leitmann (1978), are the most common: to assume a "pessimistic'' attitude for the leader (which leads to the so-called weak Stackelberg problem), or an optimistic one (leading to the strong Stackelberg problem).
Of course, any solution to the strong Stackelberg problem is also a SPE: but in case of non-uniqueness for the best reply, we remind that the strong Stackelberg problem does not have a nice behavior from the point of view of stability, thus provoking difficulties in its numerical solution.
