At the start of the 20th century, in those towns it was the predominant language, and was the mother tongue to more than 90% of the population. By the end of the century , however, its use had dropped, being spoken by about a quarter of the population.
Most Stadsfries studies have focused on determining either a Franconian (Hollandic) or a Frisian origin. The latest study has shown Stadsfries shares characteristics with the dialects of South Holland.
Stadsfries of Stadfries (Stadsfrys in de taal zelf, Stedsk in het Fries, Liwwarders in Leeuwarden) is de samenvattende naam van de stadsdialecten die in Friese steden en grote plaatsen Leeuwarden, Sneek, Bolsward, Franeker, Dokkum, Harlingen, Stavoren en tegenwoordig ook in Heerenveen gesproken worden.
Op taalkundige gronden zijn ook het Midslands, het Amelands, het Bildts en het Kollummers verwant aan het Stadsfries.
Het Stadsfries is namelijk in de 16e eeuw ontstaan toen Friesland zijn bestuurlijke zelfstandigheid verloor.
