It is performed in the following way. The athlete first stands straight and sticks their arm straight up so that your hand and fingers are extended; a measurement is taken. Then from a standing or crouched position the performer jumps as high as they can; another measurement is taken at the peak of the jump. The first measurement is subtracted from the second to obtain the hight of the jump.


Ray Ewry was the best, setting world records for the standing high jump (1.65 m on July 16, 1900) and the standing long jump (3.47 m on September 3, 1904). There, he specialised in now defunct events, the standing jumps: the standing high jump, the standing long jump and the standing triple jump.
The standing triple jump event was discontinued after those Olympics, but Ewry continued to dominate the two remaining standing jump events at both the 1906 Intercalated Games and 1908 Games, thus bringing his total to 10 Olympic titles including two from the Intercalated Games, the highest number ever achieved.
Ewry's superiority is also displayed by the fact that his world record in the standing long jump (3.47 m) was still standing when the event was discontinued internationally in the 1930s.
