Stanford is a town located in Dutchess County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,544.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 130.2 km˛ (50.3 mi˛). 129.5 km˛ (50.0 mi˛) of it is land and 0.8 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.58% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,544 people, 1,398 households, and 973 families residing in the town. The population density is 27.4/km˛ (70.9/mi˛). There are 1,712 housing units at an average density of 13.2/km˛ (34.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 94.95% White, 1.52% African American, 0.20% Native American, 1.10% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.82% from other races, and 1.38% from two or more races. 2.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,398 households out of which 31.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.6% are married couples living together, 6.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% are non-families. 24.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.99.


In the town the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 30.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 102.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.2 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $54,118, and the median income for a family is $62,171. Males have a median income of $40,746 versus $30,625 for females. The per capita income for the town is $29,236. 4.3% of the population and 2.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.4% of those under the age of 18 and 8.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Ambrose L. Jordan and William Slosson, in the cities of Hudson and New York; was admitted to the bar of the supreme court of the State of New York in August, 1828, and in 1829 began the practice of law in Hudson, New York, where he continued until his death.
In February, 1833, he was appointed by the governor, and confirmed by the senate of the state of New York, recorder of the City of Hudson, then a judicial officer as well as a member of the common council of that city, which office he held until April, 1843.
In April, 1843, he was appointed by the governor and senate a judge of the court of common pleas of Columbia County, New York, and in November, 1855, was elected county judge of that county, and in 1863 and 1867 re-elected, presiding over the courts of Columbia County for a term of twelve years.
