Stanford is a town located in Dutchess County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,544.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 130.2 km² (50.3 mi²). 129.5 km² (50.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.58% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 3,544 people, 1,398 households, and 973 families residing in the town. The population density is 27.4/km² (70.9/mi²). There are 1,712 housing units at an average density of 13.2/km² (34.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.95% White, 1.52% African American, 0.20% Native American, 1.10% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.82% from other races, and 1.38% from two or more races. 2.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,398 households out of which 31.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.6% are married couples living together, 6.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% are non-families. 24.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 30.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who are 65 years of age or older.
