It is divided into three main parts: a "Campaign" game, "Skirmish" games and a "Multiplayer" game. The "Campaign" resembles an adventure in which the captain of the ship (the player) can modify and evolve the ship with new parts, repairs and new crew members. The "Skirmish" and "play-and-forget" games are fast and self-contained and help the player become familiar with the game and the high number of missions available in the "Campaign." The "Multiplayer" allows more than one player to challenge against other human players instead of game AIs.
The game was followed by three sequels, Star Fleet Command: Orion Pirates, Star Fleet Command II and Star Fleet Command III.

The StarFleet Universe is the variant of the Star Trek fictional universe as detailed in the series of tactical and strategic interstellar wargames from Amarillo Design Bureau Inc. and used as reference for the StarFleetCommand series of computer games.
It draws from the material from the original and animated series of Star Trek as well as from other sources, such as The Star Trek StarFleet Technical Manual, and includes a substantial amount of new races and technologies, such as the Hydran Kingdoms, the Interstellar Concordium and the Andromedans.
The StarFleetCommand games draw on this universe considerably, yet maintain a number of elements not found in the original StarFleet Universe, such as movie-era ships and the Meskeen race for the ISC.
Starfleet Command is a computer game based on the table-top wargame StarFleet Battles.
Starfleet Command was released by Interplay at a time when the gaming franchise for Star Trek was at an all time high.
To this day Starfleet Command is one of the longest running serials of trek games, considered a mini franchise with a franchise as Starfleet Command was followed by three sequels, Starfleet Command II: Empires at War, Starfleet Command: Orion Pirates, and Starfleet Command III.
