Alpha Octant Factions and Empires
The Star Fleet Universe shares many of the same races and factions as the "Mainstream" Star Trek universe, though some are not what many are used to. - United Federation of Planets
- In many ways, still the same idealistic explorers everyone is familiar with. The Federation is also the economic powerhouse of the sector, which has been the cause of most tension with its neighbors.
- Klingon Empire
- The "smooth forehead" version from the Original Series, they tend to act less like the samuraish Klingons of the Next Generation and more with the "do what needs to be done" attitude displayed in the Original Series. It should also be noted that the Star Fleet Universe Klingons make extensive use of "Subject Races" who are effectively second class citizens in the Empire.
- Romulan Star Empire
- The Romulans of the Star Fleet Universe are much the same as those most non-SFU fans know. They are allied with the Klingons who helped them gain an equal technological footing with their neighbors.
- Kzinti Hegemony
- Based on the Kzin seen in an episode of the Animated Series written by Larry Niven, the Kzinti are an aggressive race who has had wars with all of its neighbors, especially the other cat nation, the Lyrans. By the time of the General War, the Kzinti are allies with the Federation, but this is more an alliance of convience against the Klingons than any true friendship. Due to licensing concerns, Star Fleet Command altered the Kzinti into the more canine Mirak.
- Gorn Confederation
- After a brief war with the Federation involving mistakes with the first contact, the Gorn are Federation allies who have been in near constant wars with the Romulans.
- Tholian Holdfast
- A crystalline race at the edge of the galaxy (located where the Federation, Romulan, and Klingon borders come together). They are isolationists, something that is understood once it was learned that they are intergalactic refugees after being overthrown as the masters of their own galaxy. They pride themselves in a "Let's you and him fight" philosophy.
- The Orion Pirates
- While Orion, and the alien race native to the planet, are officially part of the Federation, the Orion pirates are a menace across the sector, though some are an unofficial arm of the Orion government. It should be noted that many Orion Pirates are not ethnic Orions, but from nearly every race in the known galaxy.
- The Hydran Kingdom
- A race of short, three legged, two mouthed aliens with three tentacles for arms. The Hydrans live on the far side of the Klingon Empire from the Federation, and had been conquered by Klingons and Lyrans twice before fighting their way out of their far colonies.
- The Lyran Star Empire
- Distantly related to the Kzinti, the Bobcatish Lyrans border the Klingons, Hydrans and Kzinti. While they fought a few early wars with the Klingons, most of their fighting has been with the Kzinti in a conflict of mutual hatred.
- WYN Cluster
- The WYN Cluster is located at the meeting point of the Lyran, Kzinti and Klingon Empires, surviving due to the fact that the cluster is surrounded by a zone of radiation so intense that any invader's ship would be disabled long enough for the WYN defense forces to overwhelm it. The Cluster was founded by a Kzinti who attempted to overthrow the reigning Patriarch, and his followers who all initially thought they were committing mass suicide.
- Interstellar Concordium (ISC)
- A multi racial union from space just beyond the Gorns and Romulans, the ISC believed the warring nations of the General War needed to be given a chance to find peace, and launched a massive pacification campaign (read invasion) of the rest of the octant to give it to them.
- Lyran Democratic Republic
- The LDR is a province of the Lyran Empire that rebelled against its ruling count and stood as a semi-independent neutral state for fifty years. This came to an end when the Andromedans saw their space as an easy target.
- Jindarians
- A race of galactic nomads who live in near zero-g on their ships. Being a spacefaring race for far longer than nearly every other race, they are content with moving from asteroid belt to asteroid field and such, not caring what borders they cross.
- Carnivons
- A race of canine derived warriors, they appear to have a genetic link to both the Kzinti and Lyrans. The only thing that any of the three races ever agreed on was that the universe was not big enough for more than one of them. The Carnivons were eventually pushed out of known space by the other two.
- Paravian Raiders
- A birdlike race who came from the same genetic ancestors as the Gorn, the Parvarions waged a quasi religious war on that race until they were finally defeated and forcibly isolated to their own homeworld. This world was later destroyed when a monster caused its sun to nova.

Omega Octant Factions and Empires Beyond the Void, an empty region of space beyond the far border of the Interstellar Concordium, lies the Omega octet, home to a number of varying races and empires. - The Maesron Alliance
- A federation-like mix of several races, dominated by three mammalian species that found that working together was more efficient than fighting. The Maesron would eventually become the most powerful faction in the sector until internal strife caused by the aggressive domination of one of the founding races nearly destroyed it.
- The Koligahr Solidarity
- A race of jellyfish-like beings that given the technological boost allowing them to become a space faring race. The Koligahr travel in ships full of water and constructed of connected spheres. They fought several wars with the Maesron.
- The Trobrin Empire
- A silicoid race that considered themselves better than the carbon races they bordered with. Their ships and weapons were noted for their high radiation output, even at the firing point, to which the Thobrin were immune.
- The Vari Combine
- A spider-like race that found mammals, most notably the three founding races of the Maesron Alliance, to be quite tasty. The Vari were more of a racial association and had no true central government. This meant that often a hive would go to war while others did not get involved until they were attacked themselves.
- The Probr Revolution
- A race of genetically engineered salamanders, the Probr revolted against and destroyed their creators. The Probr were relatively poor, and their ships showed signs of being cheap, yet quite effective.
- The Chlorophon Association
- Huge, sentient trees, the individuals of this race were so large that their ships were literally built around a single individual. The larger ships were simply older Phon who had outgrown smaller ships. They were supported by a race of small, lemur-like creatures who lived in a symbiotic relationship with the Phon. The Phon had been in space for longer than just about any other race in the sector, but were non-aggressive and considered themselves to be more elder statesmen and historians.
- The Drex Unity
- A race that had developed robotics to the point that their day to day needs were fully taken care of by their creations. The robotic servants of the Drex created and "manned" the fleets, slowly expanding and tenaciously defending their territory. The robots of the Drex are apparently well treated (or at least programmed) by their creators and have shown no sign of rebelling against their biological masters.
- The Alunda Host
- A race from a minerally poor planet, the Alundra were able to capture and use massive interstellar creatures they discovered near their planets to create starship sized living ships.
- The Sigvirion Expansion
- A literal virus race able to infect and take over host creatures. Despite several nearly successful attempts to overwhelm the sector, they were defeated each time by the coordinated retaliations of the other races. Their massive territories were eventually retaken by the other Omegan races, and faced with extinction, the Sigvirion made held emergency discussions with the Alunda, and their offer to lend their intelligence to the Alundan bioships was taken.
- The Hivers
- Bee-like insectiods about the size of a Terran Dog, the Hivers have the advantage that all members of an individual hive are of one mind. On the other hand, their ships are all small in comparison to other races. For example, their Heavy Cruiser is no bigger than any other race's destroyers.
- The Loriyill Collective
- Small Faerie-like creatures, their ships seemed to defy standard technologies. The Loriyill were isolationists while seeming to be looking for something. This something was revealed to the be the Souldra.
- The Souldra
- Ancient enemies of the Loriyill, the Souldra are a race of energy beings controlling quasi-living crystalline ships, feeding on the life energies of others. After centuries of hiding in the Void, the Souldra made a bold invasion attempt over the entire Omega Sector and were responsible for wiping out the populations of many worlds. Eventually, thanks to concerted efforts by the other Omegan races and the Loriyill, the Souldra were finally defeated.
- The Iridani Questers
- Otter-like, the Iridani were from a small star cluster just outside the edge of the Milky Way Galaxy. They came to the galaxy in single ships (or rarely small groups) doing "Knightly" quests. Their cluster was conquered by the Andromedan Invaders, but there were so many Iridani in the Milky Way that they were able to get together and liberate their home stars.
- The Ymatrian Horde
- A warrior race that, once they had achieved the status of a space faring race, promptly tried to conquer the galaxy. Unfortunately for them, they first ran into the Drex who drew in and destroyed their fleet, then bombed them back to the "stone-age" to prevent them from threatening them again.
- The Worb Technocracy
- A race of sentient fungoid creatures, the Worb created much of their technology on recovered Ymatrian ships. While sometimes split within between the dominate races, they provided a unified face to the outside.
- The Singer Protectorate
- Small, hummingbird-like creatures, they were just reaching space when their system was conquered by the Kolighar. Eventually, they were liberated by the Loriyill who treated them as younger siblings, but they were unable to prevent the Souldra from destroying their homeworld and virtually destroying them. The survivors found refuge within the protective borders of Loriyill space.
- Federal Republic of Aurora
- A former Federation colony transported to the Omega octet by an ion storm. They managed to set themselves up as a semi-neutral enclave with sufficient defenses to protect themselves. Eventually, the same phenomena transported a Klingon subject colony, and then some Lyran warships.
- The Branthodon Regime
- A race that managed to capture and use the powerful Space Dragons of the galaxy. They fought several wars with the Alunda before being defeated by them and finally driven out of the galaxy.
- The Bolosco Merchant Guilds
- The Bolosco are multi-cellular, amoeba-like creatures who originally lived on an ice-covered "cold ocean" world in the M-81 galaxy. Fleeing persecution, a nomadic group settled and established the Bolosco Trading Guild within the Omega Sector.
- Pacifists by nature, they slowly began to build friendly links with all the other races within their newly adopted region of the Milky Way galaxy and began building effective trade links with them. For many years they prospered, remaining largely unaffected by the continual wars between the other Omegan races.
- Their idyllic existence was thrown into turmoil by the mysterious Souldra who began a heavy invasion of the Omega Sector, attacking and defeating all races that came into their sights. Unable to resist the overwhelming strength and numbers of the invading Souldran fleet, despite assistance from the Loriyill, the Bolosco Trading Guild was all but destroyed and the Bolosco population was once more forced to flee. The survivors found sanctuary within the re-emerging Maesron Alliance.
- The Paravian Jihad
- The Paravians are an avian based race that existed core ward of the Gorn home worlds, about 5 light years distance, and appeared to be a genetic mutation of the Gorn species. Despite this, both races went to war, culminating in the destruction of the Paravian homeworld, and the apparent demise of the entire race. However, a cell of survivors made it into the Omega Sector, and established a colony which slowly grew.
- The Nucian Clans
- The Rynish Enclave
- Protected by the Ryn Nebula, the tiger-like Ryn believed for many centuries that they were alone in the universe. With no dilithium at their disposal, they were unable to develop warp technology, but they developed their technology to very high levels of advancement and specialised in conservation, recycling and Quantum Transporter technology which allowed them to transport between planets with minimum expenditure.
- Although their borders were crossed by many Omegan races, including the Probr, Maesron, Trobrin, Koligahr and Sigvirion, the Ryn were more than capabable of repelling those attempts to conquer their territory. Unfortunately, they were powerless to prevent the Andromedans from dominating their tiny sector of space, and on their final attack, the Andromedans were surprised to find the Ryn worlds completely abandoned - their populations, installations, artifacts, technology and resources all completely gone. To date, the true fate of the Ryn remains a mystery
- The Zosman Marauders
- These pirates plague the trading races of the Omega Sector.
- The Echarri Dynasty
- The Qixa Amalgamate
- The Qixa are a small but proud race that resemble rabbits who inhabit a volitile and treacherous gas cloud known as the Qixavalor Cloud. Shrewd businessmen, with a penchant for trade, the Qixa were able to seize advantage of the void left by the irrevocable fall of the Bolosco Trading Guild after the failed Souldran invasion. With the loss of their main competition, they expanded their trade swiftly, growing rapidly more prosperous, and more and more tempting to the likes of the Zosman Raiders, who remain their biggest concern. Despite the size of their race, the Qixa have the highest standard of living within the Omega Sector.
- The Jindarian Freehold
- The Jindarians have been in space for longer than Homo Sapiens have been on Earth. They use hollow asteroids for their ships and travel in unrelated caravans. They care little about borders, governments, and wars and just travel from system to system, mining asteroid belts. They push aside any competition using their warp augmented railguns to fire thousands of cubic meters of gravel and rock at opponent vessels.

Races from other regions of the Star Fleet Universe - The Andromedan Invaders
- The Andromedans (who were backtracked to a galaxy visible in the Andromeda constellation from Earth) first appeared in the Star Fleet Universe about Y160, but in the Y180s, launched an all out attack on the Galaxy. They utilize technology unlike any in the Galaxy, such as Power Absorbers instead of shields which allow them to use incoming attacks to help power their ships.
- The Xorkaelian Empire
- The Xorkaelians are masters of a vast empire on the far side of the galaxy from the Alpha octant, and reportedly launch an invasion of the alpha races in the years following Operation Unity (the final victory against the Andromedan invasion) Their ships are reported to have a modular design, but little of this race has been revealed as of yet.
- The Seltorian Tribunal
- Seltorians have ventured out from their own home galaxy to hunt down the Tholians to whom they were once enslaved. Equipped with web breakers and shield crackers, the insectoid Seltorians are more than capable of wreaking their vengeance on their former masters.

History Star Fleet Universe chronology uses an Earth-based calendar (June, August, 365 days, etc.), with dates given in "Y-years". These are written as (for instance) Y168, or August Y168, and are dated to the year Earth first made contact with the Vulcans. A direct conversion to familiar Anno Domini dating is (purposefully) not given other than the fact that Y0 is somewhere between AD 2020 and AD 2100. Vulcans are a humanoid species in the fictional Star Trek universe who reside on the planet Vulcan and are noted for their attempt to live by reason and logic, with no interference from emotion. ...
Anno Domini (In the Year of the Lord), abbreviated as AD or A.D. defines an epoch based on the traditionally-reckoned year of the birth (or actually Incarnation) of Jesus of Nazareth. ...
As this chronology was created completely separately of anything done for Star Trek after the Original Series (which at the time also avoided any hard date for when it happened), it cannot (and should not) be reconciled directly with current Star Trek canon. As an example of the incompatibilities arising from the separate evolution of the two visions of Star Trek history, the SFU defines the "five year mission" of the original Star Trek series as being from Y155 to Y160, which by Paramount's chronology would put Y0 at AD 2108; while if one accepts the definition of Y0, it should be the year of the movie Star Trek: First Contact, AD 2063. In the context of fiction, the canon of a fictional universe comprises those novels, stories, films, etc. ...
