Format

Across the nation a casting or audition tours held in different regions, wherein hopeful contestants are screened by preliminary panels to be selected for singing talent or humorous potential and human interest. The first season of StarStruck was directed by Lino Cayetano, who has studied and taught film in the University of the Philippines, aside from his film and audiovisual communications course in New York Film Academy.


The pilot episode aired on October 27, 2003. Out of thousands who auditioned for a stab at stardom, only 100 were chosen for the first cut. From 100, it was trimmed down to 60, from 60 to 30 and from 30 to the 14 finalists. The Final Fourteen underwent various workshops and trainings in order to develop their personalities, talents, etc. But, the twist is that every week, one of the Final 14 may have to say goodbye until only four remain. The winner was announced on a two-hour TV special dubbed StarStruck Final Judgement held on February 01, 2004. Araneta Coliseum, the venue of the event was jampacked with an estimated 15,000 StarStruck fans and supporters and almost the same number of fans used to wait outside the venue because of seats' insufficience. Mark Herras and Jennylyn Mercado were proclaimed Ultimate Survivors and each of them received one million pesos plus exclusive contracts from GMA Network and one-hundred thousand pesos each for the runner-ups Yasmien Kurdi & Rainier Castillo. The Starstruck Avengers also received exclusive contracts. During the Judgment Day, it was also announced that the Final 14 will be having their own show. The Final Judgment rated 42.8%, impressively high for a late Sunday night telecast, the Starstruck Final Judgement was the only TV event that narrowly matched the Eat Bulaga Silver anniversary special. Stage 1: The StarStruck Playhouse and Stage 1: LIVE!

Because of the StarStruck fever, GMA Network created a new show, Stage 1: The StarStruck Playhouse. The StarStruck test continues on this show where the Final 14 have to prove their staying power in the business. Every week from Mondays to Thursdays, the show presents a miniseries starring the starstruck 1 final 14, this time their acting prowess is put into test. The show already went off the air with high ratings.


Fridays would serve as critical day because the audience will judge their performance for the week through text messaging. An acting award is also given to the survivor who excelled in that week. Stage 1: LIVE! is also somewhat a variety show for the Survivors. If Mondays to Thursdays, they showed their acting skills, during Fridays, they are able to show their dancing, singing and hsoting prowess. The show was hosted by Chynna Ortaleza and Cogie Domingo with Raymond Gutierrez. The show already went off the air with high ratings. After the phenomenal success of StarStruck, GMA Network was inspired to launch a kiddie version of the show. The first and the last of its kind in the StarStruck franchise, the show is geared towards finding new child wonders. The show was first aired on March 20, 2004 and was shown every weekdays. This season was the first occurrence where a former eliminated contestant returned to the competition and was named "The Avengers Strike's Back". C. J. Muere was eliminated on December 26, 2004 but later replaced Benj Pacia and returned to the contest through a major twist wherein an Avenger will be given the chance to re-enter the contest by emerging with at least fourth-best in cumulative scores among the Survivor Six (Cenon, Reyes, Young, Pacia, Tan, de Jesus). Computer controversy

A controversial incident happened in the sixth week of Season 3. StarStruck Council member director Louie Ignacio revealed that someone from the remaining survivors had opened a confidential file on the show's computer and had subsequently told the other finalists about the next challenges the show has in store for them.


Those implicated were Sara Larsson, Jackie Rice and Jana Roxas, with Sara eventually ousted as the sixth finalist to bid the contest goodbye.


But even with Sara eliminated, the issue did not die but grew into a big controversy with more shocking revelations and crying bouts. Jackie and Jana accused another survivor, Arci Muñoz, of lying. The show aired footage captured by surveillance cameras showing the girls taking turns at the StarStruck computer, but they all denied opening the confidential file in question.


On the seventh week fifth StarStruck Avenger Sara Larsson was given time to reveal her side of the story. On that same night, Arci Muñoz was eliminated.


Final Judgment

The Final Judgment for the third season was held on March 12, 2006 (Kapuso Holiday) at the Marikina Sports Park, the biggest venue in StarStruck history to avoid the recent Wowowee Stampede Tragedy in Philsport Arena where almost 200,000 attended but the arena can accommodate 10,000 only. 10,000 spectators attended. Both of them won one million pesos each and exclusive GMA Network contracts worth two million pesos each. As Ultimate Sole Survivor, Marky received a house and lot prize worth 2.5 million pesos, an additional 300,000 pesos in cash, and a business package worth 1.5 million pesos. First runner-ups Gian Carlos and Iwa Moto received P250,000 cash each and exclusive GMA Network contracts. While the Final Judgment was in progress, the third batch of the Starstruck Avengers were also given exclusive GMA contracts.


For their first TV assignment, the Starstruck Final 4 of Marky, Jackie, Iwa and Gian headlined one of the episodes of Love to Love Season 10 entitled "Young at Hearts". In the 4th year of the reality-talent search, the age bracket for star wannabes was adjusted from 15-18 in previous batches to 16-21, a milestone in StarStruck History.


Unlike the previous batches which launched 14, this batch were trimmed down to twenty, dubbed as the "TOP 20". Also, four winners will be picked this year — Ultimate Sweetheart, Ultimate Hunk, and Ultimate Loveteam.


Just like in previous seasons, voting is via the internet and mobile phones and this constitutes 50% of the total scores of the survivors.

The Avengers Strike Back Twist

This is a twist in StarStruck: The Next Level. The twist is that the Avengers of the fourth season will be the competitors of the Survivors in the next week's challenges. The Avengers competing with the Survivors are Chad Burden, Chariz Solomon, Dex Quindoza, Hazel Uy, Jan Manual, Jean de Castro, Lizzy Pecson, Lui Perez, Renee Lascuna, and Rich Asuncion. On the first day of the Avengers challenge, two were eliminated since there were ten Avengers and only eight Survivors. Those that were eliminated were Jean de Castro and Renee Lascuna.


At the end of the "Survivor Vs. Avenger" week, four out of the eight avengers were eliminated and the other four were chosen to compete in the "Danger 8" challenge week. The four that were eliminated were Chad Burden, Chariz Solomon, Hazel Uy, and Lui Perez. The four that were chosen for the next weeks challenge were Dex Quindoza, Jan Manual, Lizzy Pecson, and Rich Asuncion.


The Danger 8 Twist

At the end of the "Survivor Vs. Avenger" week, four Avengers out of the eight were chosen to continue competing in the show to have the right to join the remaining Survivors. From the eight Survivors, Mart Escudero and Jesi Corcuera were eliminated and were asked to join the Avenger group to compete for the two Survivor spots available that will complete the Danger 8. The avenger group consists of Dex Quindoza, Jan Manual, Jesi Corcuera, Lizzy Pecson, Mart Escudero, and Rich Asuncion.


Voting for the remaining Survivors was temporarily closed and were opened for the six competing Avengers.


At the end of the week, Mart Escudero and Rich Asuncion were chosen for the two remaining Survivor spots and thus completed the Danger 8. The Danger 8 now consists of Aljur Abrenica, Jewel Mische, Kris Bernal, Mart Escudero, Paulo Avelino, Prince Stefan, Rich Asuncion, and Stef Prescott.

Final Judgment

StarStruck fans filled the Marikina Sports Complex to capacity to witness the show's Final Judgment, which was hosted by Dingdong Dantes, Jolina Magdangal, and Raymond Gutierrez. A filled Marikina Sports Park was witness to the much-awaited event. Aside from being the Final Judgment, it was a celebration of the highly successful artista search and involved special performances from 59 StarStruck alumni.[3]


The Council—composed of (from left) Louie Ignacio, Lorna Tolentino, and Douglas Quijano—was joined by GMA-7's senior vice-president for entertainment-TV Wilma Galvante and GMA Films president Anette Gozon-Abrogar (both not pictured) for the Final Judgment night.[4]


Other awards honored that night were Jan Manual for Dats Entertaining Award, Dex Quindoza for Male with the Most Dramatic Exit, Stef Prescott for Female With the Most Dramatic Exit, and Jesi Corcuera for the Best Taktak Award.[5]


Prince Stefan and Rich Asuncion were named as The First Prince and Princess respectively. Kris Bernal and Mart Escudero were named as the Ultimate Loveteam while Aljur Abrenica and Jewel Mische were hailed as the Ultimate Hunk and Ultimate Sweetheart respectively. Both were also granted management contracts by GMA Network.[6]


During the show, the hosts announced the text votes received by each StarStruck Survivor. Prince Stefan got 193,503, Aljur Abrenica got 280,084 votes while Mart Escudero got 267,703 votes from the audience. As for the Female Survivors, Kris Bernal got 177,600 votes, Rich Asuncion got 151,981 votes while Jewel Mische received 157,618 votes. Thus, Kris Bernal and Aljur Abrenica received the Texter's Choice awards giving them both commercial endorsements for BNY.[7]. Jewel Mische will also received a modelling contract with the DutchMill Yogurt Drink because she wins the title Ultimate Sweetheart.


Before the top winners were named, Regine Velasquez sang "This is the Moment" for the remaining six contenders, while pretaped played on a big screen of them thanking their supporters.[8]


The Final Judgement only gained a rating of 24.1%, relatively high as the finale finished very late, reaching until 1:15 the following morning, but the ratings that they gained that very night was more than enough to beat their rival show that very night.

StarStruck has been a recipient of various local Best Reality Show Awards as well as Best TV Hosts Awards for its past seasons.


It was also acclaimed internationally. The StarStruck: The Nationwide Invasion (Season 3) Final Judgment was awarded nominated and Highly Commended in the 2006 Asian TV Awards. The same StarStruck III: The Final Judgment was also a Finalist for Variety Special Category in the 2007 New York Festival TV Program & Promotion Awards.


Last November 18, Starstruck won again as Best Reality Talent Search Program in the 2007 PMPC Star Awards for TV, while Dingdong Dantes, Jolina Magdangal & Raymond Gutierrez as Best Reality Talent Search Program Hosts Winners.

  • The Philippines' premiere all male dance group , the Manoeuvres are considered the lucky charms of the contestants, simply because many of the Winners danced with the Manoeuvres in their solo dance numbers during the Final Judgment, Mark Herras, Ryza Cenon, Mart Escudero & Jewel Mische all danced with the Manoeuvres before being announced as winners. with the exception of Marky Cielo. The Manoeuvres wasn't able to perform during the 3rd. Final Judgment because of schedule constraints but now Marky is dancing with the Manoeuvres every Sunday at SOP and Marky is learning to harness his dance skills with the Manoeuvres.
  • All of the Signature group dance of Starstruck were choreographed by the legendary ace choreographer, Geleen Eugenio, except batch 1's original signature dance, Hey Yah, by Outkast. Hey Yah was choreographed by the Manoeuvres, it later became a bigger dance hit when the members of batch 1 used the said dance and song for their mall tours & TV guestings.
  • Batch 1's signature group dance, Hey yah, was originally danced by the Manoeuvres for SOP's front act portion back in 2003. later the Manoeuvres danced the said song with then contestants Mark Herras, Jade Lopez and Dion Ignacio for their dance week presentation.   • It wasn't Katrina Halili who first jumped into the sexy bandwagon among the Starstruck alumnis, it was her batchmate Dion Ignacio, Dion graced the pages of Cosmopolitan Philippines as one of their sexy Cosmo Bachelors and was part of the 2004, 2006 and 2007 Cosmo bachelor show. Dion also became the image model of Walker underwear in 2004, joining Jericho Rosales and Alfred Vargas.
