In the science fictiontelevision series "Farscape", Starburst is the primary means of superluminal propulsion - and sole defensive capability - of Leviathans, a race of sentient bio-mechanical ships. Science fiction is a form of speculative fiction principally dealing with the impact of imagined science and technology, or both, upon society and persons as individuals. ... A Leviathan enters Starburst by energizing a matrix of sorts on its outer hull, beginning at the front of its body and going to the tips of its three tails that come together at their ends. Once the matrix has been completely engergized, the ends of the three tails separate from one another, and the Leviathan enters the rift in space-time that opens ahead of it, which promtly seals itself as soon as the Leviathan is through. While in Starburst, the Leviathan is "riding the seams between dimensions", essentially sliding around the outside of the universe to get to (roughly) its destination. Navigation is less of a science and more of an art, as one never knows exactly where one will come out when leaving Starburst.
Starburst opens up a gateway through space-time that allows the Leviathan to exist in and travel through one dimensional space, thus drastically increasing the rate of speed a Leviathan can achieve without requiring increased amounts of energy output beyond what is needed to maintain Starburst.
Starburst is able to increase the rate at which vast distances are covered by moving the Leviathan into one dimensional space-time.
Starburst is extremely inefficient for short movements under a light cycle (the distance a beam of light travels in one cycle).
