The existence of Starfleet Marines has never been canonically verified in any of the incarnations of Star Trek. Series creator Gene Roddenberry once suggested that, in the original Star Trek series, the Enterprise carried a platoon of Marines. Debate continues in fanon as to whether Starfleet has an actual Marines "Corps." This debate is fueled in part by details such as the appearance of Colonel West in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, which is the first and only time a Starfleet officer is ranked with that particular grade in Star Trek canon (West's name being derived from the real-life Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North.)
