History of the Route

State Route 92 began as a connector from Douglasville to U.S. 278 in Hiram. It was slowly expanded to the route of today that roughly forms a western by-pass of Atlanta connecting suburban towns. Since the road evolved in what were extremely rural counties and joined together along previously existing county roads, the highway saw tremendous relocation during the mid to late 20th century. U.S. Highway 278 is a spur of U.S. Highway 78. ... This article is about the state capital of Georgia. ...

Most of the route changes on State Route 92 occurred in Paulding County where State Route 92 was moved away from Dallas, eliminating an overlap along U.S. 278. The route originally followed all of what is today Dallas-Acworth Highway with the first relocation to Bobo Road and the second to County Line Road, which is today also Hiram-Acworth Highway. The oldest alignment was bannered as State Route 92 Spur and totalled seven miles before it was changed to S.R. 381 and later decommissioned. Another part of the route to see enormous change was in Cherokee County where first a newly rebuilt and upgraded State Route 92 near Woodstock was moved from present-day Bascomb Carmel Road to Old Alabama Road in 1962. Since part of the route also followed present-day Kellogg Creek Road, this resulted in a portion of S.R. 92 following Bells Ferry Road, which later became the southernmost miles of since-decommissioned S.R. 205. S.R. 92 was completely relocated to Old Alabama Road in the early 1970's and continues to follow its present-alignment.

S.R. 92 was also extended around 1990 east of where it originally ended at Sandy Plains Road in Cobb County just east of the Cherokee County line. The extension added the route to formerly county-maintained Woodstock and Crossville Roads, though both roads are still known by those names. S.R. 92 has also been significantly upgraded and widened in parts with portions in Cherokee, Fulton, Cobb, Douglas and Fayette widened during the 1990's. Work to continue widening the highway began again in late 2005 as well.

State Route 92 Bannered Routes

Below is a list of the routes that carried the 92 designation with a banner:

  • State Route 92 Connector

Followed present-day East Paulding Drive (formerly Dragstrip Road) from S.R. 120 to Dallas-Acworth Highway (Old S.R. 381). This Paulding County route was also known as part of S.R. 176 and S.R. 120 Connector. Decommissioned in 1982.

  • State Route 92 Spur

As mentioned above, follows present-day Dallas-Acworth Highway from S.R. 6 Business in Dallas to S.R. 92 in the Roxana community. This seven-mile route is located in Paulding County, and was renumbered to S.R. 381 in 1979 and later decommissioned in 1992.
