Dai (Chinese character: 代, pinyin: Dài) was a state of the Tuoba clan of Xianbei ethnicity during the era of Sixteen Kingdoms in China. Its descendants established the Northern Wei Dynasty in the 4th century. Its capital was Shengle (盛樂) (near modern Helingeer county (和林格爾)of Hohhot, Inner Mongolia). It would be conquered by the Former Qin in 376. The Sixteen Kingdoms, or less commonly the Sixteen States, were a collection of numerous short-lived sovereignities in the China proper and neighboring areas from AD 304 to 439 after the retreat of the Jin Dynasty (265-420) to South China and before the establishment of the Northern Dynasties. ...
