Dohrn rented two rooms for the "StazioneZoologica di Messina", but quickly realized the technical difficulties of studying marine life without a permanent structure and support facilities, such as trained personnel and a library.
In order to promote the international status of the Stazione and to guarantee its economic and hence political independence and freedom of research, Dohrn introduced a series of innovative measures to finance his project.
The success of the StazioneZoologica, and the new way of thinking and funding research are the main legacies of Dohrn.
An agreement has been entered into between the StazioneZoologica and the Molecular Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole for the purpose of strengthening the scientific cooperation between Italy and the United States in the areas of biology, marine ecology, molecular evolution, and related sciences.
A bilateral agreement for a joint program in the field of the history of biology was concluded in December 1991 between the StazioneZoologica and the Institute for the History of Science and Technology of the Moscow Academy of Science.
The object of the agreement is to highlight the role of the StazioneZoologica in the development of biological sciences in Russia.
