Steve Alten (born August 21, 1959, Philadelphia) is an American science fiction author. He is best known for his Meg series, a set of novels positing the survival of large Megalodon sharks. Alten holds a bachelor's degree from Pennsylvania State University, a master's in sports medicine from the University of Delaware, and a doctorate in sports administration from Temple University. Goliath

1. Goliath: Humanity is both endangered and protected by the gigantic super-submarine of the title, captained by a man who intends to save the world from its own foolishness and cruelty, destroying select human monsters who would rule through terror. Only the former Army captain Gunnar Wolfe and his ex-fiance "Rocky" Jackson can put a stop to these plans, if they can ever stop fighting each other. But there's an even greater threat: Sorceress, the submarine's artificial brain, has become sentient... and is making plans of its own, to wipe out all of humanity rather than a few individuals.
2. Sorceress (Goliath 2): The A.I. Sorceress has been retrieved and purged of its links to its creator, Simon Covah, so that it may be used as part of a mission to the watery moon of Europa. But to ensure that Sorceress's purging is complete, the scientists who revived it must offer the computer access to the one man who defeated it: Gunnar Wolfe. • Grim Reaper: A screenplay and book co-authored with MEG producer and CHUD.com founder Nick Nunziata. The pair walked the island of Manhattan researching the project and have just finished a very elaborate treatment.

Films

• His first novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror is being made into a movie (Meg) by New Line Cinema, known for the The Lord of the Rings trilogy. According to Steve Alten's official website, New Line will come to an agreement concerning the movie's script, budget, and casting early Spring 2006. Alten predicts the film will be green-lit shortly after, with a Summer 2008 release.

• Domain and Goliath are also due to be adapted to the big screen, with Phobos and Sorceress to be written in an order based on whichever film is chosen to be made first.

• Steve Alten announced that the people who produce Prison Break on TV just bought the rights to The Loch.
