Kragthorpe earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1988 from West Texas A&M University (then known as West Texas State University) and received his MBA in 1989 from Oregon State University. He then spent more than a decade as an assistant coach at several colleges, and served as the offensive coordinator at three of them (Northern Arizona, North Texas, and Texas A&M). Kragthorpe took over the University of Louisville vacancy on Jan 9, 2007. He replaced former head coach Bobby Petrino who agreed to serve as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Kragthorpe's contract is a 1.1 million dollar a year contract (with bonuses) for five years. Louisville hired Kragthorpe in what many consider to be a "whirlwind courtship", becoming the head coach in less than 48 hours after Petrino submitted his resignation. In his third game as coach, Louisville's 4 game win streak over rival Kentucky was snapped. In his fourth game as coach, Louisville's 20 game home win streak ended. Criticism

After losing several games in embarassing fashion, Kragthorpe encountered a good deal of criticism from fans and media in his first season at the University of Louisville. Many fans quickly became frustrated with the team's poor fundamentals, a perceived lack of discipline (as evidenced by on-the-field penalties and numerous off-the-field issues), player apathy, and incompetence from the coaching staff. Specifically, many fans believe that Kragthorpe has failed to address several obvious issues with the team, such as its porous defense or lack of motivation. Other perceived issues include poor performance on special teams and weak play calling. In addition, Kragthorpe has been criticized for rocketing the previously prominent and defending Orange Bowl champion Louisville football program into mediocrity, as evidenced by a 3-3 record to start the season and losses to Syracuse and Utah at home. Louisville's lack of success under Kragthorpe has prompted the media to re-nickname Papa John's Cardinal Stadium from "The Oven" to "The John," a reference to how bad the program stinks. As the head coach, Kragthorpe has been booed (to various degrees and for various reasons) at all four of the team's home football games thus far, sparking controversy among the fan base. Many fans have pressured athletic director Tom Jurich to fire Kragthorpe (immediately or at the end of the season), believing that Kragthorpe is "in over his head" and pointing to the team's inability to improve and the aforementioned issues as evidence. In addition, several fans have questioned why Jurich hired Kragthorpe so quickly, instead of carefully examining multiple candidates to find the best one. Many have pointed out that Kragthorpe and Jurich had a pre-existing friendship, suggesting that Kragthorpe's hiring was an act of cronyism by Jurich.
