Encyclopedia > Steve Mahoney

Steven W. Mahoney (born July 18, 1947) is a Canadian politician.

Mahoney was first elected to the Ontario legislature in the 1987 provincial election in the riding of Mississauga West. He was re-elected in the 1990 provincial election and became Chief Opposition Whip. He ran for the leadership of the Ontario Liberal Party in 1992 and placed fifth at the Liberal leadership convention after running as a right-wing Liberal.

He lost his seat in the 1995 Ontario election and then entered federal politics when he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in the 1997 Canadian election in his old riding of Mississauga West. He was re-elected in the 2000 Canadian election.

On April 11, 2003 he was appointed Secretary of State for selected Crown Corporations but was demoted to the backbenches when Paul Martin became Prime Minister of Canada in December. As a result of redistribution, Mahoney was defeated in his bid for the Liberal nomination in Mississauga—Erindale by fellow Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish and thus did not run for re-election in the 2004 Canadian election.
