Ralston was drafted 18th overall in the 1996 MLS College Draft by the Tampa Bay Mutiny out of Florida International University, and proceeded to become the first MLS player to win the Rookie of the Year Award. Ralston played for the Mutiny for six years, leaving only after the team was contracted in 2002 to join the New England Revolution. He was Tampa Bay's all-time leader in games played (177) and points (130). In his first year with the Revolution, Ralston led the league in assists with 19. He is currently the all-time MLS leader in games and minutes played. In ten years in the league, he scored 51 goals and 102 assists in 281 regular season games, and added three goals and five assists in 23 playoff games. Ralston became the first Revolution player in three years to have scored on a free kick, a penalty kick, and in the run of play in the same season when he converted a left-footed shot off the post in a 2-2 tie with D.C. United last Saturday.
Ralston appeared to thrive in central midfield against D.C. United, maintaining possession, unsettling the defense, and his late ball to spring Pat Noonan on a breakaway nearly decided the match.
Ralston was moved to the left wing earlier this season to counter Kansas City's Chris Klein, and had an inspiring second half as the Revolution rallied for a 3-2 win over the Wizards.
