Stephen Samuel Stipanovich (b. November 17, 1960) is a former Americanbasketball player. A talented 7-foot center from the University of Missouri, Stipanovich was selected by the Indiana Pacers with the second pick of the 1983NBA Draft. While playing for the Pacers, Stipanovich was a remarkably consistent performer; he could provide a dozen points and eight rebounds on just about any given night. Unfortunately, knee problems limited his career to five seasons, and he retired in 1988 with career totals of 5,323 points and 3,131 rebounds. SteveStipanovich, shown battling Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, has his career cut short by a rare knee injury.
Stipanovich came to the Pacers as a consolation prize in 1983, as the franchise lost a coin flip with Houston for the No. 1 pick in the draft.
As a proud alumnus of the franchise, Stipanovich is pleased to see Walsh has been able to build a team that has been among the most competitive in the NBA over the past decade, but has done so with players who represent the community well.
Lots of articles I just looked up refer to Stipanovich's retiring because of a bad knee (and here) or a freak foot problem.
But Dawkins and several articles say that in fact Stipanovich's career was ended by the injury he got from shooting himself in the foot with his own gun.
SteveStipanovich playing with guns is nothing new.
