Interstate 55 (abbreviated I-55) is an interstate highway in the central United States. ...
The eastern terminus of the Stevenson Expressway is located at U.S. Highway 41 (Lake Shore Drive). Its western terminus is a matter of opinion — prior to the opening of Interstate 355 (North-South Tollway), Interstate 294 (Tri-State Tollway) was commonly held as the starting point to the Stevenson. One could also argue the end of Illinois Route 126 (without dispute, IL Route 126 is the northern terminus of Historic ALT US Route 66 through Plainfield and Shorewood, which has a southern terminus at Gardner at IL Route 53) as the beginning of the Stevenson, as the last few hundred feet of 126 is an east-west highway, running in a similar direction as the Stevenson. As of 2006, Interstate 55 has six lanes all to Weber Road in Bolingbrook. Taking Weber Road as the southwestern terminus, the Stevenson Expressway is 35 miles (53 km) from start to finish. Most others argue- and as many map search engines further indicate- that the Stevenson ends closer to the Chicago city limits. This notable theory suggests that the Stevenson is allocated with Interstate 55 destined west from Lake Shore Drive to the interchange of I-55/Joliet Road (Historic US 66). At this junction, Interstate 55 becomes Joliet Road until near Romeoville when Joliet Road South (Historic RTE 66-Exit 269) continues on towards Joliet respectively. Anything west of this point is simply referred to as "55" by locals. Regardless, IDOT has yet to officially classify any expressway title outside of the Chicago city limits.
