Stheno ("forceful"), (Greek: Σθεννω), in Greek mythology, was one of the Gorgons, vicious female monsters with brass hands, sharp fangs and hair of living, venomous snakes. Unlike her sisters, Stheno was very independent. The second-youngest of the three sisters, she killed more people than both her sisters. Her sister Euryale was immortal and sister Medusa was mortal. Stheno's head was displayed when she died for all the gods to mock^{[citation needed]}. She was a daughter of Phorcys and Ceto, or sometimes, Typhon and Echidna. • Euryale and Stheno appear in DC Comics' Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman and Wonder Woman titles.
• Stheno plays a major part in the backstory of one of City of Villains non-player villain groups, the aptly-named "Snakes".
• Stheno (along with Medusa and Euryale) is featured as an enemy in the PC game Titan Quest.
• Stheno also appears as an enemy in the Super NES games Final Fantasy IV (Final Fantasy II in the US) and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.
• The Gorgons appear as villains in American Dragon Jake Long in the episode "Bring It On" and "Furious Jealousy".
• The Gorgons also appear in the God of War video game series made by SCE Studios Santa Monica for the Playstation 2 as one of the many types of enemies the main character Kratos fights against. As Medusa appears as a boss in God of War I and Euryale as a boss in God of War II, it is possible that Stheno will appear in the upcoming God of War III.
