Stockholm is a town located in St. Lawrence County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,592.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 244.2 km˛ (94.3 mi˛). 243.3 km˛ (93.9 mi˛) of it is land and 0.9 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.37% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,592 people, 1,381 households, and 999 families residing in the town. The population density is 14.8/km˛ (38.2/mi˛). There are 1,520 housing units at an average density of 6.2/km˛ (16.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.91% White, 0.33% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 0.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,381 households out of which 35.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.0% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.6% are non-families. 22.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.01.


In the town the population is spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.7 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $30,720, and the median income for a family is $38,370. Males have a median income of $30,444 versus $21,821 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,109. 16.0% of the population and 11.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.3% of those under the age of 18 and 6.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

STOCKHOLM, the ninth town organized, was one of the original "Ten Townships No 2" It was erected from Massena jurisdiction by legislative act passed February 21, 1806.
West Stockholm.- This pretty village is situated in the southwest part of the town, on the west branch of the St. Regis, and has been locally known as "Bickneyville," from Amos Bicknell, the pioneer, whose settlement and building of the mills has been mentioned.
The First Baptist church of Stockholm, at "Stockholm Center," was organized prior to 1812, and was incorporated May 25, 1822, with P. Stearns, Warren Webster, and Luther Fuller, trustees.
