Phillips was born in Texas City, Texas to Victor (Monsanto chemical engineer) and Grace (teacher) Phillips and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Parkway West High School, where he was very involved and highly regarded by his teachers. During his senior year in high school, he won so many departmental awards (more than 10) that the school started limiting future students to winning only 2 awards. During college at Yale he was the starting quarterback for the football team and graduated with a degree in philosophy. He was also a member of the Yale secret society “Scroll and Key.” He has also hosted Weekend Magazine with Stone Phillips. In 1986, he landed his first major on-air role as a correspondent for 20/20. That year, he also acted as substitute host on Good Morning America and as sports anchor on ABC’s World News Sunday.
