Stradbroke Island was a large sand island in Moreton Bay near Brisbane, Queensland. A particularly severe storm in 1896 made a permanent breach in the island which is now two quite separate islands.


North Stradbroke Island is the larger of the two, about 38 km long and 11 km wide.


South Stradbroke Island is about 22 km long and 2 km wide.

The islands, they were separated by a storm in 1896, are only 13 km from the seaside suburbs of Cleveland and Redland Bay by regular ferry services.
Although the islands (at the time it was just one island) were sighted by both Captain James Cook and Matthew Flinders it wasn't until 1827 that the name Stradbroke, after the then Earl of Stradbroke, was given to the island by his son, Captain H. Rous, the commander of the HMS Rainbow.
Stradbroke Island's most famous resident was the late Kath Walker (Oodgeroo Noonuccal), the highly regarded Aboriginal poet, who was born on North Stradbroke, established the Noonuccal Nughie Education and Cultural Centre on the island, and who has been at the forefront of attempts to curb the large scale sandmining which has occurred.

The Stradbroke Island Scuba Centre is the scuba trading arm of Manta Lodge and offers a full service dive facility, right from the beach at Manta Lodge.
North Stradbroke Island (or "Straddie" as called by the locals) is a sand island 50 km long and 20 km wide consisting mostly of National Park and Aboriginal land.
The island is an ideal place to experience environmental, cultural and outdoor activities.
