Stranmillis University College is a university college of Queen's University, Belfast and was established in 1922 to provide state-funded teacher training by the then newly created Government of Northern Ireland to ensure that their would be a non-denominational teacher training college within the new country after partition of Ireland. This status was undermined, early in its existence, when a statement by Roman Catholic bishops to the effect that a graduate of the institution would not be allowed to teach in a Catholic school soon ensured the that the institution became identified as a Protestant only institution. The institution is located in Belfast, and has approximately 700 students today and offers the BEd, PGCE and TESOL, as well as other courses.
The university college was associated with the university since 1968 when it became a college of the university and commenced offering the universities degrees. In 1999 this status was upgraded to the current university college status. The university college is financially and organisationally independent of the university.
Today the College is a multi-professional institution, no longer engaged solely in the education of teachers.
All College courses lead to a qualification validated and awarded by Queen's.
As Stranmillis is a Universitycollege, all its students are also enrolled at Queen's and have access to the usual university facilities just a short walk from the College, which is located in south Belfast.
StranmillisUniversityCollege was founded as a non-denominational institution in 1922 to provide state-funded teacher training in the northern portion of the partitioned island of Ireland.
The College's Board of Governors, representative of various educational interests, is directly appointed by the Minister with responsibility for Higher Education in Northern Ireland.
StranmillisUniversityCollege is located in a residential area of south Belfast.
