A large house in Syracuse's Strathmore Neighborhood

Strathmore is a neighborhood in the southwest of Syracuse, New York. It is a mostly residential neighborhood that has many houses from the early and middle of the twentieth century. Marketed as "an exclusive residential district" when it officially opened on September 27, 1919 it contains upper class houses. The original advertisement flyer proclaimed: "There can be no cheap homes in Strathmore 'By the Park,'" the park being Onondaga Park, which contains Hiawatha Lake. It was zoned strictly residential, allowing for nothing but one-family homes, with a maximum of a one car garage. There are many Colonial Revival-, Tudor-, and Arts & Crafts-style homes, and every year there is an annual event known as the Strathmore House Tour, where five renovated houses are open to the public. In 1987 Onondaga Park became an official Syracuse Historic Preservation District.
