North of the station trains pass the mothballed Aviemore (Speyside) station used by Strathspey trains from the opening of the preserved line until 1998 when the railway was extended into the mainline station. This situation was caused by the refusal of British Rail in the 1970s to allow the use of the mainline station due to concerns about loss of capacity at a time when it was mistakenly believed that traffic on the Highland Main Line would rise dramatically with growth in the North Sea oil industry, hopes that were to prove unfounded. Aviemore (Speyside) station building was moved from Dalnaspidal, 30 miles to the South, which had closed in the 1960s. Up to this point all the track was original but from Boat of Garten northwards, the track had been lifted and structures demolished by BR in the 1960s. The tracks to Craigellachie and Granton had left the station extending in a Double track formation as far as Croftnahaven, where the GNSR line turned sharply South-East and crossed the Spey. This curious arrangement was adopted because a signalbox for a junction here was deemed too expensive. Boat of Garten is a small village in the Highlands of Scotland. ...
