Strongbow Cider - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (472 words)
Strongbow is a brand of cider originating in England, but now available all around the world.
Strongbow is named after the Anglo-Norman knight Richard de Clare, later Earl of Pembroke, called "Strongbow" because during his wars in Ireland he relied heavily on Welsh archers, while the native Irish had few bows and relied on javelins.
In addition to Strongbow Sirrus, Scottish and Newcastle have extended the Strongbow range with Strongbow Jacques, a 5.5% ABV cider with cherry, raspberry and flcurrant flavours made in Belgium by Stassen SA.
Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (495 words)
Henry II was concerned about his barons' new lands in Ireland and summoned them back to England in 1171 to extract their fealty and to prepare for his own invasion of Ireland that year to create the lordship of Ireland.
Strongbow died of an infection in his foot in 1176 during a rebellion by the Irish and was buried in Dublin - his monument can be viewed in Christ Church Cathedral.
Strongbow's widow, Aoife, lived on to 1188, when she is last found in a charter.
