Hall was educated at Glossop grammar school and UMIST. He joined the BBC in 1959 as a general reporter on Radio Newsreel and a sports journalist on Sports Report where he still broadcasts. Between 1965 and 1990 he presented the BBC's North-West local news programme North West Tonight.
