History

In May of 1992, a partnership of Viacom, MTV's parent company, and STAR TV launched MTV Asia. In the Philippines, it began airing on UHF Channel 23, licensed to Ermita Electronics Corporation, the country's first UHF TV station fully devoted to rebroadcasting a foreign satellite channel. In 1995, conflict of interest between Viacom and STAR, stemming from the latter's launch of its own music channel, Channel V. After UHF 23 was put off-the-air, the frequency was reassigned to ABS-CBN through a subsidiary, Amcara Broadcasting Corporation and has been rebranded as Studio 23. In 1995, Studio 23 came into actualization with the group of television pioneers composed of Leo Katigbak (Programming), Jojo Estacio (Programming and Acquisitions), Kai Rodriguez (Finance and Administrative), and Edson Aguiflor and Allan Coronel (Creative on-air). Later the same year, other professionals joined the group like Manuel "Meckoy" Quiogue as Managing Director, Rica Alfonso for Marketing, and Edge Pamute for Special Events. In preparation for the network's big launch, Studio 23 tied-up with foreign broadcast companies yet maintaining to be a wholly owned subsidiary of its mother network, ABS-CBN. First programs to be broadcast were "News 23" and "Studio 23 Presents". "News 23" was the first of its kind news program in the Philippines at that time with a new crew of reporters and anchors with a hip approach in presentation. "News 23" conceptualized by Executive Producer Winona Cueva and Associate Producer Dean Bernardo aimed to capture a young audience with an informal style of reporting and presentation. Four months after its first airing on October 1997, veteran news anchor Frankie Evangelista became lead anchor for the program, lending a face of authority and credibility to the new network. Today, Studio 23 has gone far in terms of programming. It is currently the leading Ultra High Frequency ("UHF") channel in the Philippines with 39 regional stations operating, reaching 50% of all television-owning households in the country. Studio 23 continued to diversify its programming format as it featured hit international TV series - Survivor in 2000 and subsequently acquired its succeeding editions. The exclusive Philippine TV airing of the hit international series was such a great success that they imported "The Amazing Race" for its third season (which the first 2 seasons had not air on this channel) in 2002. On 2004, it was relaunched as the "KaBarkada" (Buddy) network with the tagline "Studio 23, KaBarkada Mo!" (Studio 23, your Buddy!). Studio 23 is also placing 3rd in the ranking of all TV stations in the Philippines. Studio 23 is also seen throughout the country via its regional stations.


In 2007, Studio 23 relaunched changing logo, graphics, and theme song "Sumigaw" by Rivermaya.
