Encyclopedia > Studio Pierrot

Founded in 1979, Studio Pierrot (スタジオぴえろ) is a Japanese animation company. They are considered specialists in the magical girl sub-genre.

The company has a simple, yet ambiguous line-art logo, which can be interpreted either as a figure raising two crosses or the face of a clown (where the crosses symbolize his eyes). As the cross has no religious significance for most of the Japanese people, both interpretation can be valid. Pierrot is a Japanese word for clown, and is taken from the French language.
