The Subaru B9 Tribeca is a five- or seven-seat mid-size, luxury crossover SUV which was launched for the 2006 model year and went on sale in June 2005 in the United States. It is based on the Subaru Legacy platform and the B9X concept car. The production version of this SUV is named for New York City's famed TriBeCa neighborhood. It is the first Subaru vehicle, excluding the Japan-only Subaru R1/R2 featuring the new Subaru design language of a triangular grille and a rounded bodyshape, which many in the Subaru community have found controversial. Subaru has since abandoned this concept for its models introduced in 2006 and beyond. Saab was planned to have also received a version of the vehicle, called the 9-6X, but such plans have been stopped with Toyota's acquisition of the FHI stake held by General Motors (Saab's parent company). The Tribeca has received a generally good reception by automotive critics and buyers. It was intended to give current Legacy/Outback owners somewhere to "go" when they wanted to move up to a larger vehicle. It has been harshly criticized by the automotive press for its controversial styling and minuscule third-row seat (supposedly the reason for the vehicle's existence in the first place). It has won best interior of the year in the Premium Crossover Utility Vehicle segment. Also, it was considered Most Innovative Concept at the 2004 Detroit auto show.

    usnews.com: Auto reviews: 2006 Subaru Tribeca (8/20/05) (772 words)
On the surface, Subaru's avant-garde new flagship vehicle–which the automaker calls its first SUV–looks nothing like the Legacy or Outback wagons that were among the first successful "crossover" vehicles on the market.
The Tribeca is indeed festooned with creature features–some will say artifices–that Subaru's core customers may disdain, such as accent lighting in the doors and foot wells, two-zone air conditioning, a moonroof, and a seven-inch digital screen for radio, climate control, and other vehicle information.
Subaru is targeting the same upscale family buyers that Chrysler has gone after with the Pacifica, and Ford with the Freestyle.
2006 Subaru B9 Tribeca Reviews. SUV Reviews by CNET. (1658 words)
The 2006 Subaru B9 Tribeca Limited 7-Passenger is the company's first vehicle to offer a third row of seating, and it manages to hit the mark more than it misses.
The jumble of design cues continues down the Tribeca's profile: headlights melting from hood to fender, exaggerated waist contour, trendy bulges around the wheel openings, a curious faux-bumper cutout wrapping around the corners, and the acute angle of the rear quarter windows, which leaves an awkward stretch of sheet metal between the glass and taillights.
Subaru's usual horizontally opposed engine configuration, albeit with two more cylinders than we're used to, means a shorter, wider engine that can sit lower in the chassis.
