Metropolitan Areas The metropolitan areas (Grande Área Metropolitana, in Portuguese) are territorial units formed by grouping municipalities. Their purpose is to economize on municipal investments and services. New Portuguese laws approved in May 2003 give the metropolitan areas greater autonomy. They are required to include at least nine municipalities with a total of at least 350,000 inhabitants. The greater metropolitan areas (Grande Ãrea Metroplitana, in Portuguese) are a territorial unity and continuity that gatters municipalities. ...
