Sugar Mountain is located at 36°7'24" North, 81°51'19" West (36.123294, -81.855179)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 6.3 km˛ (2.4 mi˛). 6.3 km˛ (2.4 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 226 people, 121 households, and 61 families residing in the village. The population density is 35.8/km˛ (92.6/mi˛). There are 1,212 housing units at an average density of 191.8/km˛ (496.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 99.12% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.44% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.44% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 121 households out of which 7.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.0% are married couples living together, 4.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 48.8% are non-families. 35.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.87 and the average family size is 2.32.


In the village the population is spread out with 6.2% under the age of 18, 18.6% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 113.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 114.1 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $37,500, and the median income for a family is $50,208. Males have a median income of $26,528 versus $30,833 for females. The per capita income for the village is $27,063. 21.0% of the population and 6.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 12.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
