Sullivan County is a county located in the U.S. state of New York. As of 2000, the population was 73,966. The county seat is Monticello. The name is in honor of Major General John Sullivan, who was a hero in the American Revolutionary War. The county is well-known internationally for its rich entertainment history. For the past few decades, Sullivan County's economy has been in a serious slump. Almost all of the resorts that were popular in the 1960's are closed up. There is virtually no industry to speak of and anyone with a good job commutes out of the county. The only chance for this poverty-stricken area is if casino gambling operated by Native American tribes wins state and federal government approval in 2007 and reignites the tourism industry. Sites being considered for casinos include Monticello Raceway as well as some of the former Borscht Belt hotels.
