West Sumatra (Indonesian: Sumatra Barat) is one of the provinces of Indonesia.
It lies on the west coast of the island Sumatra, and borders the provinces of North Sumatra (Sumatera Utara) to the north, Riau and Jambi to the east, and Bengkulu to the southeast.
It appears that the capital of Sulawesi Barat is Mamuju.
On 2002-09-24, Kepulauan Riau province (temporary capital Batam, to be supplanted by Tanjung Pinang) was split from Riau, consisting of its islands not adjacent to Sumatera.
Barat is West, Selatan is South, Tengah is Central, Tenggara is Southeast, Timur is East, and Utara is North.
