SUMMERSTON (395 words)
The Summerston fortlet was discovered from the air in 1980 and confirmed by excavation the same year.
However, the trial excavation of one of these, at Summerston (NS 574724), confirmed the suspicions aroused by primary interpretation that it adjoined a hitherto unknown fortlet attached to the S side of the Antonine Rampart.
Centuries of cultivation and other land-improvements had severely denuded both structures, but it was possible to determine that the fortlet had measured about 30 m square within a single ditch and that the temporary camp was already in existence when the fortlet ditch was dug.
