Suncheon (Suncheon-si) is a city in South Jeolla (Jeollanam-do) Province, South Korea. It is a scenic agricultural and industrial city of around 250,000 people nearby the sea at Suncheon Bay . It's located in the southeastern corner of Jeollanam-do, just over an hour south-east of Gwangju. Forty minutes south of Suncheon is the port city of Yeosu, and twenty minutes to the west of Suncheon is Gwangyang. This is a copyrighted and/or trademarked logo. ... The city is currently experiencing strong development due to being included as part of the Gwangyang Bay Free Economic Zone, one of three newly created Free Economic Zones (FEZs) in South Korea due to open within the next decade. Suncheon is dubbed by its city council as the City of Beautiful People.


Suncheon's new slogan is "A-HA Suncheon." They decided on this because they could not think of anything else.


Suncheon's nearby attractions include:

  • Waeseong (왜성 - 倭城), a small, 16th-century castle built by the Japanese;
  • Naganeupseong Folk Village (낙안읍성 민속마을), the largest remaining South Korean fort city built on a plain;
  • Seonamsa (선암사 - 仙岩寺) Buddhist temple;
  • Songgwangsa (송광사 - 松廣寺) Buddhist temple; and
  • Boseong tea plantations.

Further south from Suncheon is the city of Yeosu along the coast about 40 minutes away, and Gwangyang is about 20 minutes to the east.
